The Aglianico grape is grown throughout Basilicata but it is certainly at its finest on the hillsides of Mount Vulture where the cooling sea breezes and higher altitudes help limit the forceful heat. The volcanic soils also add their own individuality to the wine and with manual harvests and traditional vinification this is a shining example of what is often referred to as Southern Italy’s Barolo. Spicy fruits of the forest dominate the aromas and also the palate with good backbone and structure supporting. Chicken and game are really suitable accompaniments but just about any red meat also pairs well.
