The Maconnais and Beaujolais have long been considered the heart of the wine world by many consumers. Here we offer two classic wines - a St Veran from vineyards just outside the Pouilly Fuisse appellation and a Fleurie, one of the world's sexiest and most evocative red wines - that are ideal for current consumption and are perfect for drinking over Christmas.

Well we know the Ashes aren't going too well but these two little crackers from Shane McLoughlin really are too good to miss. A crisp and full flavoured Sauvignon that you would think comes from New Zealand and the wonderful Shiraz/Grenache / Mourvedre blend that's just like a Chateauneuf du Pape with some added sunshine. Terrific value.

Something for the firm Francophiles! Chablis is perhaps the world's most famous white wine and this boi-dynamic example from Julien Brocard is simply fantastic. Too often the quality of Chablis is dreadful but this is one of the finest we've ever tasted. And to balance the case, a Cotes du Rhone Villages from the famous Chateauneuf producer Chateau de la Gardine. A great pair of wines that show true class.

The shining light of Stellenbosch is most certainly the Rustenberg Estate. This pair of wines show exceptional quality and value for money. The Chardonnay would give most consumers the impression that it is from one of the great appellations of the Cote d'Or whilst the John x Merriman is a dead ringer for a classy St Emilion.

Marcos Eguren, the owner and wine-maker of Sierra Cantabria is a true gentleman in all of the meanings of the word and his wines reflect personality without doubt. Some of the finest wines produced in the region come from this Bodega and this pair show all the class and breeding one would expect. A full flavoured and rich white Rioja (seldom seen at other Bodegas) and a ripe and deep red from selected vineyards make this a great collection for all lovers of the true Rioja.

The 2000 vintage produced stunning wines on both banks in Bordeaux but these 2 wines are really exceptional. Chateau Sansonnet, the home to the negotiant firm of Edonia was in ruins until they aquired it in 1998 and now is producing wines of great finesse and breeding again. The Chateau Rolland Maillet is the private chateau of the Merlot guru Michel Rolland and again, this wine is a real stunner. Both are drinking now but have many years of life ahead in bottle.

Ian Hollick is one of Coonawarra's greatest characters - a genial man with a great zest for life. His talent as a wine-maker is enormous and the three black label wines from the oldest vines in specific blocks of vineyard are truly exceptional. All pure varietals, they really show how good the terroir of Coonawarra really is and, although they each have time left in bottle they are drinking perfectly at present.

This mixed case of 3 stunning pinks is the perfect choice for summer drinking. First is a delicious offering from Marcos Eguren. The Torre Abalde Rosado is light and fresh with delightful aromas of red berries and a perfectly balanced acidity to refresh the palate. The next wine is the Bordeaux Rose from Chateau St Florin in the Entre Deux Mers, a delicious bottle with aromas of ripe strawberries and deep, ripe fruit flavours on the palate. Made from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, this really is an exceptional wine. Last but certainly not least is the Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo from Taverna Nova, a gloriously deeply coloured and deeply flavoured wine from the Abruzzo in Italy. Almost a light red in colour, the fruit flavours are intense and linger for an age. All three wines are really stunning and are perfect for drinking over the summer months.
