Austria, Germany and Hungary
Since the problems of chemical additions, Austria was forced to reinvent itself as a wine producer. A job well done for previously it was regarded as a pale imitation of Germany while now it has very much carved out a niche in its own right. Gruner Veltliner has become synonymous with the country and the general quality level that it now produces is second to none. Germany continues to produce some of the world’s most wonderful wines, mainly from the reisling grape but with other varieties now featuring well too. Our short selection from Selbach Oster shows just how fine the wnes can be with clean fruit and bright, racy acidity. The late harvest examples are particularly fine as are the Aszu wines from Hungary’s Tokaji region. Rich and luscious with clean balancing acidity, they are some of the finest dessert wines available today.
