France’s longest river, the Loire, runs through the Garden of France. It is a land of crisp, dry whites, from Sancerre and Pouilly Fume in the east to Muscadet in the west. Sitting in the middle is a jewel where the Chenin grape comes to the fore to provide the honeyed, luscious wines of Vouvray. Loire Valley wines offer great value for money in general with few wines attracting stratospheric prices. The best of the sweeter wines can age for decades whilst the youthful vigour of the fresh, dry whites will give almost instant delight.
