Rhone Valley wines can almost be said to combine the best virtues of Burgundy (sensual aromatics) and Bordeaux (depth and body). They have abundant keeping qualities yet are approachable and fun to drink in their youth. The finest northern Rhone Valley wines come mainly from Syrah (reds) and Viognier (whites), whereas in the hotter south the wines tend to be a mixture of several grape varieties (as many as thirteen in the case of some Chateauneuf du Pape!). Here, Grenache Noir reigns supreme for the reds but is seldom seen as a soloist, complexity being derived from the harmony with others. All in all, Rhone Valley wines offer some of the greatest value in France and should never be overlooked whether it be for humble quaffing wines or the finest offerings for those special occasions.
