Rioja Cuvee – Sierra Cantabria 2006
Overview
The vineyard for this flagship wine is located in Labastida where the hand selection of grapes allowed only the ripest and healthier fruit to make it to fermentation. It had a two day cold soak before fermentation began followed by 2 days post fermentation thus extracting all of the fine flavours and fine ripe tannins. It was then aged in both French and American oak barrels for 12 months before finishing for a further 4 months in purely French oak. The wine has a deep purple almost black colour. The palate is laden with ripe black fruits spices and some pencil shavings mirroring the fine aromas. It is extremely concentrated and savoury yet surprisingly approachable. It’s drinking well now but has a good 5 to 10 years or so ahead of it for you to enjoy with roast meats and casseroles especially lamb and game birds such as partridge.
