Acustic Celler is without doubt one of the finest Bodegas in the young DO of Monsant in the province of Tarragona. As a fairly new addiotion to the wine scene, it is not the best known of areas but due to the quantity of old vines that are available, the general quality level is high.
Albert Jane founded Acustic Celler in 2004 and today he farms 17 hectares of his own vineyards with a further 25 hectares farmed on loan. Both of these areas have old vines of Grenache and Carignan (known locally as Samso) together with a small portion of white varieties, Grenache Blanco, Macabeo and Grenache Gris. Albert is a most genial man and his passion for the wines of this area is clear for all to see. Farming is organic although not yet certified as such.
The present range from Acustic Celler has 1 white wine and 3 reds which vary according vineyard age and blend. Whilst the Brao and Auditori are quite spectacular, the work-horse wines are the Acustic Blanco and Tinto which represent superb value for their quality. When first tasted, I struggled to put the white wine in Spain, thinking it was more akin to a top flight Rhone white yet as it opened it definitely showed its origins. The red was definitely showing its home soil as soon as it was poured and as it opened in the glass, it became one of the highlights of 2011's tastings. A truly great offering and one not to be missed.
