Bouchard Finlayson - Walker Bay
Near to the southernmost tip of Africa, the Bouchard Finlayson Estate lies in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley (literally the Heaven and Earth Valley), framed by the mountains and within sight of the ocean. This is a frost free area with clay shale vineyards that are ideally suitable for wine grape production.
Bouchard Finlayson was created in 1989 with Peter Finlayson being both a partner and wine-maker. His early recognition was as wine-maker at the neighbouring Hamilton Russel estate which was renowned for its Chardonnay and Pinot Noir production. Bouchard Finlayson likewise now produces what is considered South Africa's finest Pinot Noir together with a variety of excellent Chardonnay cuvees. In addition, Peter has planted some Italian varieties that contribute to his fine Hannibul cuvee together with some Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc that contribute admirably to the Blanc de Mer selection.
The continued focus on biodiversity by all at Bouchard Finlayson means that only 19 hectares of their land is under vine amidst the natural fynbos - a valuable ecosystem - where the unique flora flourish unhindered in this delightful region.Great wines with great ambition.
