Champagne G H Mumm was founded in 1827 with the family having been previously involved in the wine business in their homeland of Germany. In fact the family can trace its history back to medieval times and the lineage includes both barons and knights!
The flagship cuvee of Champagne Mumm, the Cordon Rouge, was developed back in 1875 as a gesture towards the Legion d'honeur, France's highest accolade which continues to this day. The non-vintage cuvee is Pinot dominated with around 30% of Chardonnay and again, around 25% of back vintages to add depth and consistency to the blend.
But for us, the best cuvee of Champagne Mumm is the Mumm de Cramant, originally known as Cremant de Cramant, for this wine is at just 4 atmospheres of pressure rather than the usual 6. It also is pure Chardonnay from the Grand Cru village of Cramant in the Cotes des Blancs. This is a sensational wine and is certainly worthy of inclusion in every cellar. Light, fine and perfectly balanced.
