Chateau de la Gardine - Chateauneuf du Pape
For more than 50 years Chateau de la Gardine has been the recipient of uncompromising dedication by the Brunel family establishing it in the first flight of Chateauneuf du Pape wines, a position which has been maintained consistently since the 1970s.
The family, who have been vignerons since the 17th Century, acquired Chateau de la Gardine in a rather dilapidated state shortly after the Second World War. Situated near the Combe Masque, west of the town, the soil is thinner and lighter than elsewhere in the appellation, but the high proportion of old, deep-rooted vines and expert husbandry ensure no diminution in the quality of the fruit which is hand-picked at the moment of peak condition for each individual grape variety.
Patrick Brunel is a wonder in the cellar making wines of great class and structure that are open for drinking in both youth and in age. There is no magic formula here, just respect for tradition and a desire to allow the balance of nature to shine through in the wine.

A wine of great concentration with intense black fruit notes balanced by exotic spices, coffee, licquorice and violets. The tannin structure is strong but they are ripe and unobtrusive. A great expression of the Rhone.

Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc Vieille Vignes Chateau de la Gardine 2001 |
A really rich wine based on the Roussanne grape and barrel fermented too. It's mature but still with plenty of life left as this cuvee really holds well in bottle. Deliciously rich with glorious candied fruit.
