Coriole Winery - McLaren Vale
Coriole Vineyards was established back in 1967 by the Lloyd family in Australia's McLaren Vale yet the vineyards date back as far as 1919. Shiraz is the mainstay of their range, a variety ideally suited to the region where the vineyards are just in sight of the sea yet only an hour or just less from Adelaide.
The soils at Coriole are mainly Terra Rossa where the earth has a red tinge to it due to the oxidation of the iron content.and these are eminently suitable for Shiraz. It produces wines of good structure and backbone that have an excellent potential for ageing.
Wine-making at Coriole is very traditional and still a fairly hands on affair. Open fermenters with hand plunging is the normal method of fermentation and each block or vineyard is vinified seperately. These are great wines and stylish too, just as you'd expect from McLaren Vale.
