The Hospices de Beaune was founded in the 15th century by Nicolas Rolin, the then chancellor of Burgundy. It was founded as a charitable hospital for the poor and the old building, the Hotel Dieu, is in the centre of Beaune and has one of the finest pan-tiled roofs, a real symbol of Burgundy.
Over the years, vineyards were gifted to the Hospice de Beaune and the wines sold to pay for its upkeep. Often these vineyards were the prime parcels of land, a quick way into heaven was meant to be the reason for the gifting! Casks are now auctioned on the third Sunday of November and the purchases brought up in the various negotiant cellars of the town before bottling when ready.
Current quality levels from the Hospice de Beaune remain high and the wines are much sought-after especially amongst Burgundy afficionados. Maybe by buying them you may get into heaven quickly too!
