Like many Californian growers, the Scotto family have their roots in Italy. In 1903 they emigrated to America taking with them the fine traditions that were passed down on the family estate in Iscia. Now they are making excellent varietal wines and blends that lack the price tag of their neighbours in the Napa Valley but yet they have all the vibrant fruit and depth that you would expect. Great examples of just what California can offer without caning your wallet!
Media attention for Scotto wines has also been growing, with the Old Vine Zinfandel appearing on Jancis Robinson’s purple pages website and inspiring this comment from Simon Woods: “Why aren’t there more wines like this from California?..It’s hard to think of a wine business that wouldn’t benefit from such a wine.”
Yes, the Scotto wines are a wonderful example of a pure fruit-driven style that is not interfered with by the injudicious use of oak. Too often we see the wines of Californina that are dull and uninteresting but these are wonderful wines with great character and style.
