If you want to put wine from the three big names on the table, Meursault, Puligny and Chassagne Montrachet, it can cost a kings ransom these days but some of the lesser known villages offer wines for really enjoyable drinking that lack nothing in terms of quality, it's just they have slightly different personalities. Here we have put together three of our favourites for you to enjoy.
Montagny 1er Cru Cave des Vignerons de Buxy 2018
Fresh as a daisy and full of fruit, this excellent white Burgundy comes from the intermediate clay/limestone slopes in the commune of Montagny. It was vinified in stainless steel vats so there is no oak to detract from the pure fruit characteristics. It has an overall citrus character with fruit, flowers and mineral notes behind. Ample and round on the palate, the wine culminates in an elegant and long finish.
Monthelie "Les Champs Ronds" - Domaine Boigelot 2017
A superb single village Burgundy born just round the corner from Meursault. The vineyard is close to the centre of the village and is planted with Chardonnay. On the nose their are aromas of vanilla, white flowers and fresh hazelnuts. The palate mirrors these and displays great freshness with plenty of chewy fruit. The finish is fairly long with mineral notes. A wonderful food partner.
Saint Romain "La Combe Bazin" - Domaine Prunier Bonheur 2017
Saint-Romain La Combe Bazin 2017 has a bracing minerality imparted by the calcium-rich soils of its vineyard. This makes it an ideal partner to food, whilst the perfect level of acidity provides freshness and vitality. This is classic white Burgundy at an affordable price and is sure to please lovers of fine Chardonnay. The 2017 vintage gave wines that are very approachable in youth and this is a super example.
