Bouchard Finlayson Crocodile's Lair Kaaimansgat Chardonnay

£18.49

Bouchard Finlayson Crocodile's Lair Kaaimansgat Chardonnay was fermented in the classic Burgundian fashion and allowed to age in small barrels in contact with its lees. The wine displays a clean, mineral quality that reflects the vineyard's mountain terroir. Bright citrus fruit with floral notes and a lively palate, this is currently slightly closed and fresh but it will evolve to gradually offer more pronounced nutty and creamy components.

Although not owned by the estate, Bouchard Finlayson has been uninterruptedly linked to the Kaaimansgat or Crocodile’s Lair vineyard for close to twenty four years. The Kaaimansgat vineyard is hidden away in the Elands Kloof Valley, behind the village of Villiersdorp, some 80km from Hermanus. Crocodile’s Lair is located 700 metres above sea level, its grapes ripen a month later than those in other Cape Chardonnay vineyards and it benefits enormously from cool autumn temperatures.

The vines are unirrigated and they produce small berries with a correspondingly high skin to juice ratio which, after a short period of maceration, adds an extra flavour component to this super wine. The dry nature of the Crocodile’s Lair vineyard also offers a distinctive mineral quality which permits a greater maturation potential.

Why we like this wine

The world is awash with Chardonnay, much of it very uninspiring and very few wines live up to the quality of fine white Burgundy that gave Chardonnay its reputation. This one does. It's classically framed with just a hint of added ripeness that South Africa gives. With decent Burgundy having a price tag of more than £30, this offers the chance to enjoy something really fine for just less than £20.

  • Classic Chardonnay
  • Well priced for the quality
  • Generous and rounded
