Chateau Viranel – a special place.

Chateau Viranel is in the appellation of St Chinian, at the edge of the Massif Central and close to the town of Beziers. The Chateau itself is owned by the Bergasse-Milhe family and has been for almost 5 centuries, in fact since 1551. It’s only in more recent times that the wines of the area have become famous, perhaps since the quality was recognised and people strived to make great wines instead of adding to the European Wine Lake. It is now a much sought-after label that is sure to please all lovers of big spicy reds and some fine and elegant whites.

It is now run by the two brothers Arnaud and Nicolas who both respect the area and strive (and achieve) the greatest of wines that delight the palate. The hot Mediterranean climate is tempered by the north wind – the Tramontane - from the mountains of the Cévennes. Cool nights help the grapes ripen gently, and the breezes dry up any moisture that might spoil them, so they are in the best possible shape when picked. All in all a great place to plant vines.

They work as sustainably as possible. Nature has given them this wonderful heritage, and they do their utmost to preserve and enhance it. This shows through in the quality of the wines and in their very drinkability. Their philosophy is simple - without great grapes there can be no great wines.

The Range we offer:
Viognier – IGP Pays d’Oc
Delicate nose of white flowers and citrus fruits. Sweet palate marked by good acidity, dominated by lemon and grapefruit notes, coated by apricot aromas. Fresh and lingering finish. Enjoy this wine as an aperitif as well as with seafood, fish and cheese.

Saint Chinian Rouge AOP
This is a classic Saint Chinian blend of Syrah, Greanche, Mourvedre and Carignan that produce a wine that is as spicy as it is drinkable. It has a complex bouquet of griottes cherries with notes of licorice and violets above. On the palate it is full and generous with plenty of fleshy fruit flavours and good supporting tannins that are ripe. Ideal with red meats and game.

Rendez-vous IGP Pays d’Oc
A real workhorse that will partner with just about any food. It’s a blend of equal amounts of Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc that has an hypnotic bouquet of red fruits that leads to a very easy drinking palate with generous fruit and easy, soft tannins. A great wine that should grace any occasion great or small.

Aromes Sauvages IGP Pay d’Oc
A superb wine from old vines Alicante Bouschet, a grape that was nearly extinct some years ago until the skill of guys like Nicolas and Arnaud came to town. A nose of black fruit with garrigue notes behind and hints of more animal scents. Soft and fleshy, it is not heavy thanks to the fresh attack, the tannins are still young but full of promise. Dark chocolate, mocha and graphite aromas with spices involved in stirring the sensual pleasures. Decant to open this wine even more. Unusual but extremely drinkable.
