Chateau Du Vieux Montpezat has a lustrous red colour that is wonderfully enticing. There are very pleasant fruity, ripe plum and spice aromas on the nose that continue on the palate. This is a delicious wine with a generous palate, fine grained tannins, a voluptuous structure and a long finish. The flavours are more complex and developed than those of the 2015 vintage also available here.

The appellation of Castillon Côtes De Bordeaux was created in 2009 from the old Côtes De Castillon appellation. It is close to Saint-Émilion both geographically and stylistically, yet for some reason it is little known in the UK. This is a great oversight as the wines offer tremendous quality and value, as this Château Du Vieux Montpezat ably demonstrates.

Jean Francois Meynard, an ex-champion rower, owns Château La Bourrée and Château Du Vieux Montpezat is its second wine. Located in Saint Magne De Castillon, the small 10 hectare property is run according to the principles of reasoned agriculture. That is not quite organic, but is as close as possible. The wine comprises of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc with the vines being around 20 years of age. Château Du Vieux Montpezat is aged for 12 months in one third new oak barrels and two thirds in stainless steel tanks.
