Famille Baldes - Cahors

The Baldès family enjoys a long history in the Cahors region with the first plots of vines being planted back in 1830 in the Clos Triguedina. One thing in its favour is the age of the vines with the vineyard being replanted in the late 1800’s after the Phylloxera outbreak which devastated the French wine regions.

The current proprietor is Jean-Luc Baldès and who continues the family innovations in Cahors production – the family was the first to introduce stainless steel vats for vinification and was also the first to produce a Malbec rosé.

The estate covers 70 hectares and the soil structure, clay and limestone and siliceous clay, are similar to the soils found in the Pomerol region of Bordeaux where other great red wines come from. All of the vineyards are scattered around the region between the 2nd, 3rd and 4th terraces and therefore a number of differing styles can be achieved. For us, the Chateau de Flore is produced from the younger vines of the 2nd terrace and no oak is used in the ageing so a great purity of fruit can be achieved. However the Cuvée des Baldes is a blend of wines from the 2nd, 3rd and 4th terraces from vines greater than 30 years of age and with the final wine aged for 12 months in French oak barrels.

Both of these wines are really representative of what Cahors can offer these days and they are sure to delight the drinker.
