Didier Desvignes Domaine Du Calvaire De Roche-Gres Moulin-A-Vent Terre De Manganese, in its heavy bottle with its elegant wax closure, suggests from the outset an altogether more serious wine than Didier Desvignes' regular cuvées. The colour is atypically deep for a Beaujolais and the nose initially offers balsamic and feral aromas before opening up with ripe cherry fruit and touches of oak spice. The palate, as you might expect, shows greater extraction and concentration than many a Beaujolais, displaying opulent dark cherry fruit, delicate spice and nicely integrated oak. Although very drinkable already, this ageworthy Beaujolais has the capacity to evolve into something really quite Burgundian over the next five to ten years.

Didier Desvignes produces this from 80 year old vines growing in the best plots of manganese-rich soil of his Moulin-À-Vent vineyards. Aged for a year in oak casks, this complex and powerful Beaujolais is a tour-de-force for the region, expertly balancing the freshness of Gamay, the unique minerality of the soil and the richness of barrel ageing. We first tasted this in a great restaurant in Tournus, Le Terminus, with an andouillette served with a grain mustard sauce. What a treat! We immediately went to hunt out Didier Desvignes since when we have enjoyed a long and fruitful partnership.

Why we like this wine

Beaujolais has always been a great favourite of ours but when you find something as sophisticated and generous as Didier's Moulin a Vent it's impossible not to love it. Moulin a Vent is a Beaujolais usually capable of ageing gracefully for a decade or so and this wine proves the rule. Full flavoured and complex, it drinks more like a wine from the Cote d'Or now and at a fraction of the price too.

  • Highest possible quality Beaujolais
  • Perfect for current drinking
  • A joy with red meats
