Astoria Cuvee Honor -Venezia D.O.C.is the latest release from this top sparkling wine producer. The vineyards for the grapes for this wine are grown close to the River Piave between the provinces of Treviso and Venice. It is a blend of Glera (Prosecco), Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc. The pearl is very fine and continuous, the aromas are elegant and packed with fruit as is the palate where notes of pear dominate. This wine was created to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the company.

This is the thinking man's Prosecco. With the basis being the Glera (Prosecco) grape it shares many characteristics with Prosecco but the Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco give the wine added complexity. It's fresh and just off-dry so it makes a wonderful aperitif but try it with fish dishes and all sorts of starters, you'll love it.

Why we like this wine

We love quality Prosecco and so does most of the UK wine drinkers. But this has an added dimension. It's very easy drinking with very refined fruit flavours. It makes the palate come alive before a meal and certainly gets the appetite going. You could almost be in Venice!

  • A first class aperitif
  • More complex than Prosecco
  • Just the right level of sweetness to suit most palates
  • Stylish presentation

About the grower

Brothers Paolo and Giorgio Polegato, members of the same winemaking family behind Antonini Ceresa Vini, set up Astoria Vini in 1987. Astoria wines are mainly produced from grapes grown on its own 40 acre Tenuta Val De Brun estate in Refrontolo, right in the heart of the DOCG Conegliano-Valdobbiadene zone. As you would expect from such a location the excellence of Astoria Vini Prosecco is a given. What you might not expect is the range and the quality of the still wines produced by Astoria Vini, from light, fresh, unoaked whites to substantial, ageworthy, barrique-aged reds and dried grape, Passito dessert wines - all of which are very stylishly packaged.

Awards for the Astoria Vini range of wines are numerous and it is seldom a year that goes by at Vinitaly, Italy's major wine fair, that the Polegato brothers are not rewarded in some form. In addition to the high quality of their wines they consistently offer exceptionally stylish packaging, helping the Astoria Vini to wines stand out in any situation. Great value, great looking and great quality.
