Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru

Latricières-Chambertin is a grand cru vineyard and corresponding appellation of the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy. The vineyard site (climat) is located on the upper slopes of Gevrey-Chambertin's grand cru belt, at the very southern end of the commune and consists of just 17 acres (7ha) of vines.

The Latricières vineyard is bordered on its southern side by the Aux Combottes Premier Cru site (which is isolated from the other 25 premiers crus by the intervening grands crus). Also just to the south is the Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, the finest in the neighbouring Morey-Saint-Denis commune. All of Gevrey-Chambertin's grand cru sites lie adjacent to the key Le Chambertin site – a condition of grand cru status when the village's vines were classified in the 1930s. This prestigious climat is located immediately north of Latricières.

The soils of the Latricières-Chambertin vineyard are well drained and stony, with a thin layer of pebble-strewn, chalky topsoil over a deep, rocky base. The percentage of clay reduces slightly towards the higher edge of the site, giving way to drier, looser limestone. The regional climate is of continental type, producing relatively hot, dry summers and cool, crisp winters. Particularly in summer, this climate type brings high diurnal temperature variation, which helps to maintain a balance between natural sugars and acidity in the wines.

The Chambertin half of the Latricières-Chambertin name originally applied only to the lieu-dit that has become the Le Chambertin and Chambertin-Clos-de-Bèze sites. Such was the prestige of the wines from this ancient vineyard that its name was appended not only to the surrounding vineyards (including Latricières) but also to Gevrey village, resulting in the modern Gevrey-Chambertin form.

Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru has a vivid colouration ranging from deep ruby to black cherry. Its aromas suggest strawberry, blackcurrant, and gooseberry as well as fruit stones, liquorice, and spices. Violet, moss and underbrush are also likely to be present. On the palate, power, opulence and elegance unite to make a full and complex body, full of sap and voluptuously textured. Keeping potential is 10 years minimum.

The wines of Latricières-Chambertin are iconic Pinot Noir wines; powerful, virile, complex and intense. They demand equally complex dishes to keep the pairing in balance. Feathered game (grilled or, better still, in wine sauce) will, of course, be a worthy companion. The power of the wine’s tannins will withstand the shock of contrasting textures while its aromatic complexity and its opulence will bring out the differences.
