Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru

Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru wines are those produced under the strictest conditions of the Pernand-Vergelesses appellation, exclusively from grapes grown in officially classified premier cru vineyards. They are permitted to state the words premier cru on their labels and to append their official climat name to that of the commune in the appellation title.

Pernand-Vergelesses itself is a commune at the northern end of the Côte de Beaune district in Burgundy. It has had its own Pernand-Vergelesses appellation since December 1936 and produces both red and white wines – from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes respectively.

The commune underwent its vineyard classification in September 2001 – much more recently than its neighbouring communes, most of which were classified in the mid-1980s. Just under half of the land covered by the appellation was rated as premier cru, divided into eight climats.

The red wines of Pernand-Vergelesses are not as highly regarded as its whites, which might seem odd given its location immediately next to the red wine grand cru stronghold of Corton. The answer is simply that Pernand is located on the western side of the Corton hill, immediately below the white wine grand cru of Corton-Charlemagne. On this side of the hill, the terroir is quite obviously better suited to Chardonnay, producing flinty, austere wines which develop famously well with age. In fact, the premier cru vineyards in this immediate area, on the Corton slopes, hold the classification exclusively for their white wines.

The premier cru vineyards of Pernand-Vergelesses are divided quite neatly into two sections: to the east of the village and to the south, where they flow into the plains east of Beaune. The eastern section focuses on white wines, while the more obvious premier cru sites, with their south-eastern aspect on the limestone slopes of the Côte d'Or, produce both red and white.
