Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru

Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru wines are those made under the Puligny-Montrachet appellation, from grapes grown in officially recognised premier cru vineyards. The Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru title covers white wines made from Chardonnay and red wines made from Pinot Noir, although reds make up only a tiny fraction of the village's output. It is Puligny-Montrachet's high-quality grand cru and premier cru white wines – regarded by many as the finest possible expression of Chardonnay – that are responsible for the appellation's fame and stellar reputation.

Puligny-Montrachet itself is a small village in the Côte de Beaune sub-region of Burgundy. Its 17 named premier cru sites are permitted to include the words premier cru on their labels, along with their specific vineyard names. These sites were identified and demarcated in 1984; a few with particularly prized terroir (such as Le Cailleret and Les Pucelles) have reputations almost as impeccable as their grand cru neighbours.

The undeniable success of Chardonnay in Puligny is the result of several factors, most of them encompassed by the concept of terroir. The local combination of topography, soil structure and climate gives producers high-quality grapes with which to make their wines. The soils here are characteristically Burgundian, with a high content of limestone – especially on the slopes of the Côte d'Or.

The hillsides above the village are of particular importance to Puligny-Montrachet, not only because they angle the vines towards the ripening rays of the morning sunshine, but also because they are less affected by the village's relatively high water table. In general, the best wines come from vines forced to grow deep, strong root systems, which they will only do if searching for water or nutrition. The climate here is of continental type, with warm, dry summers and cool, extended winters. While spring arrives earlier than in Burgundy's northern outposts such as Chablis, the commune's viticulturalists must still contend with cold spring mornings and the risk of frost damage to their vines.
