Volnay Premier Cru

Volnay Premier Cru wines are those made under the strictest production conditions of the Volnay appellation of the Côte de Beaune sub-region in Burgundy. They may only claim the premier cru title if the grapes come from vineyards officially recognised as premier cru by the INAO, the French government organisation in charge of the country's appellation system.

Volnay's Premier Cru vineyards, which make up more than half of the appellation's catchment area, are renowned for producing some of the smoothest, most delicate red wines of the southern Côte d'Or. Located between Pommard (famous for its powerful reds) and Meursault (the home of rich whites), Volnay is fortunate to have a forte to distinguish it from its more prestigious neighbours.

Volnay's finest premier cru vineyards are located in a tight band of high-quality terroir stretching right across the appellation from Pommard to Meursault. Like almost all of the region's most-prized vineyards, they are situated on the mid-slope of the Côte d'Or escarpment. Here, they benefit from well-drained, limestone-rich soils and a south-east-facing aspect – helping the vines to capitalise on the morning and early afternoon sunlight.

Volnay-Santenots wines are grown in the Santenots Premier Cru vineyard. Santenots is technically on the other side of the Meursault-Volnay commune boundary and produces both red and white wines. Its red wines are sold as Volnay (under the title Volnay-Santenots), while the whites take the Meursault and Meursault Premier Cru appellations.
