Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru

Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru wines are those produced under the strictest conditions of the Vosne-Romanée appellation, from grapes grown in officially classified premier cru vineyards. The Vosne-Romanée appellation also covers the vines of Flagey-Echezeaux; although the villages are entirely distinct, their vineyards are grouped closely together.

Vosne-Romanée itself is a small commune in the Côte de Nuits district of Burgundy, whose red wines are widely recognised as being amongst the world's finest. About one-third of the wines made under Vosne-Romanée village appellation are entitled to bear the premier cru title – and thus to append their climat names to that of the village on labels.

Vosne-Romanée's Premier Cru vineyards are located on the mid-slope of the Côte d'Or. They lie to the immediate north and west of the village itself, surrounding the village's more prestigious grand cru sites.

On the other side of the village, to the east, the Vosne-Romanée vineyards fail to meet premier cru standards. The slopes are too shallow to offer any degree of elevation or increased exposure to the sun, reducing the likelihood of the grapes attaining optimum ripeness and complexity. The problem is almost the same on the higher slopes, where the ground rises towards the spine of the Côte d'Or; the mesoclimate here is slightly too cool to guarantee full phenolic ripeness.

The classic Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru wine is considered by many to have the perfect balance of weight, structure, elegance and longevity. Tasting notes often refer to a combination of tart red fruits (particularly cherries and raspberries) and darker elements of undergrowth, liquorice and smoke. While considered to be among the finer red wines that Burgundy has to offer, Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru wines don't quite reach the fabled heights of their grand cru counterparts.
