Kiwa By Escarpment has a lot happening on the nose: rich, black fruits, fleshy mulberry - a lovely complex mix. The mid-palate richness is underpinned by fresher, red cherry fruit with bramble and black cherry dominating and filling out the long finish.

Planted on the Martinborough Terrace deep alluvial gravels in 1989 by Graham and Gill Cleland, the 2 hectare Kiwa vineyard is one of the finest in the district. It consistently produces wines with pure, expressive Martinborough style. Vine age, good shelter and a blend of UCD Davis clones 5, 6 and 13 merge into classic wines of great depth and character. The hallmarks of the Kiwa vineyard are the savoury, earthy undertones combined with beautiful ripe black, red and green fruit flavours which are always expressed in the resulting Pinot Noirs. These characters are consistent from year to year, ensuring that the terroir is paramount in the bottle.

It was open top fermented in traditional wooden cuvées, hand plunged every 12 hours, with a total vat time of 16 days. After pressing, it was matured in 40% new French oak barriques for 18 months. It was bottled without fining or filtration, promoting its soft mouth feel and texture. Kiwa is an outstanding example of classic Martinborough Pinot Noir.
