Merlot is extremely sensitive to heat and water stress, meaning that it is vital to pay it a great deal of attention in the vineyard. Since Elgin is a lot cooler than most South African wine regions, the vine is less prone to heat stress and the grape bunches are able to hang longer on the vine for better all round ripeness at lower alcohol levels. The vineyards are grown predominantly on the high iron content Bokkeveld Shale that is prevalent in the Elgin Valley basin.

There are two clones of Merlot used for Catherine Marshall Peter's Vision Merlot, French and Italian, evenly split into 50% of each. The Italian clone provided the flinty, tobacco and structured backdrop with earthy undertones, whereas the French clone provided the black fruit top notes for flesh and opulence on the mid palate. Canopy management was carefully manipulated with the focus on ripening the tannins to prevent any greenness from being evident at harvest.

Bunches were de-stemmed and lightly crushed before being hand sorted at the crusher. Spontaneous fermentation took place in open top vats and the extraction from the skins was carefully monitored. Once fermentation was complete, the vats were individually tasted and selected based upon their tannin and flavour attributes before being manually pressed in a stainless steel basket press. The vats selected were kept separate to create as many blending profiles as possible for the final assemblage. Malolactic fermentation was completed in 225 litre oak casks until the wine was racked off its lees and further matured for 16 months in a combination of new, second and third fill French oak casks.
