Chardonnay. Whatever your feelings about it (we're big fans), there's no denying that Chardonnay makes many of the world's greatest white wines. From England to New Zealand and in almost every country in between, this compliant grape is crafted into a range of wines with a breadth unequalled by any other variety: it can be oaky, lightly oaked or completely unoaked, sparkling or still, sweet or dry. About the only thing it can't do is make red wine.

Never mind the ABC (Anything But Chardonnay) brigade, this selection shows that you can enjoy a different style of Chardonnay every day of the week and still not get bored!

If we're talking about unoaked French Chardonnay, then most people's go-to wine would be a Chablis. Our Chablis selection from Domaine Vrignaud is faultless and highly recommended, but here at Gerrard Seel we like to walk a less well-travelled path. Domaine Du Bicheron's Mâcon-Péronne is a brilliant unoaked white Burgundy, showing apple, melon and citrus fruit with a richness derived from time spent ageing on its lees. The South African Indaba Chardonnay is a brilliant value bottle, offering bright, fresh apple and pineapple fruit with a touch of oak for roundness.

Staying in South Africa, Paul Cluver's Chardonnay is barrel fermented and matured, but only around 20% of the oak is new, resulting in a beautifully balanced and elegant wine. By way of a delicious comparison from Burgundy, the spiritual home of Chardonnay, Maison Chanzy's Rully En Rosey is made in very similar fashion to the Paul Cluver wine. The fruit from 30 year old vines is aged half in stainless steel, half in oak, 15% of which was new. Sticking with the oaked theme but moving things up a gear, Hollick's Bond Road Chardonnay from Coonawarra in South Australia offers a big mouthful of rich fruit and buttery, oaky notes without being unbalanced in any way.

The final wine in this selection is a real celebration of Chardonnay's nobility: Champagne. Chardonnay is one of the three grape varieties used to make Champagne and usually this sparkling wine is a blend of either two or all of these. However, there is a style of Champagne known as Blanc De Blancs, made solely from Chardonnay, that is renowned for its elegance and refinement. Our Guy Charlemagne Blanc De Blancs is no exception, offering floral, nutty, citrus and brioche flavours balanced by a streak of minerality. A great apéritif, but try this with food also.
