Chateau Haut-Colombier is a blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Malbec and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Ripe and juicy, this is a ready-to-drink wine. It has berry fruits cut with acidity and with a firm line in spicy wood from barrels that are one- to three-years-old. The tannins give a solid foundation and the potential for a period of ageing after bottling.

Emmanuel Chéty is the winemaker at Haut-Colombier and is in charge of the vineyards. As is fairly typical in the Côtes De Blaye, these are planted with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, with an average age of around 30 years. After fermentation the wine is left to macerate on the skins for 20 to 30 days before being transferred into oak barrels to finish its ageing. Delicious when young, Château Haut-Colombier is also capable of ageing for up to decade from the vintage.

About the grower

At the southern end of the Côtes De Blaye, the 400 year old Château Haut-Colombier is in the village of Cars, situated on one of the highest hills of the area, overlooking the Gironde estuary. Olivier and Emmanuel Chéty are heirs to a long tradition of winemaking on the 54 hectare estate. Their family purchased Château Haut-Colombier in 1803, and they are the eighth generation to run it, combining the best aspects of traditional and innovative winemaking techniques. The name Château Haut-Colombier comes from the medieval dovecote which lies near the house.
