Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Prieur 2012

"The 2012 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Prieur has a perfumed, expressive bouquet with vibrant red cherry and fresh strawberry fruit that displays fine delineation. The palate is rounded and supple on the entry. There is a layer of plush red berry fruit here laced with spice and a savoury aspect that comes forth towards the finish. It just needs to gain a little more focus but that might be delivered with 3-4 years in bottle. 89-90 Points"

The Clos Prieur vineyard was originally the property of the monks of Cluny Abbey (the Prieuré De Cluny). Just under 2 hectares in size, Drouhin-Laroze owns 0.3ha that it first planted in 1954. Situated to the south of Gevrey, this east-facing, premier cru vineyard neighbours Mazis-Chambertin to the west and Chapelle-Chambertin to the south. As with all of the domaine's premiers crus, this Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur was matured in 40% new oak and the balance was second fill barrels.

From Neal Martin writing on Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
Here too there are background hints of oak that do not materially detract from the layered nose of violet, plus, blackcurrant and warm earth nuances. There is good richness and volume to the delicious, intense and solidly complex medium weight flavours that possess a certain tenderness on the balanced and lightly mineral infused finish. A wine of harmony and grace but one that has the material to reward mid-term ageing. Drink to 2022+. 89-92 Points
