Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint Jean 2011 is vibrant and pure on the nose, with notes of freshly-cut apple and a touch of citrus. The palate of this Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet is concentrated and intense, with orchard fruit at its core and freshened by a bright, lemon-zest acidity. There is a subtle touch of oak and a gentle white florality that comes through on the finish.

The Chassagne-Montrachet premier cru of Clos Saint Jean was once exclusively red wine territory and the red wines commanded higher prices than than most of the area's whites, but today Pinot Noir is much harder to find in the vineyard. Some commentators regard this as a shame because the ground seems better suited to Pinot Noir, but because the soils are somewhat denser here the white versions of Chassagne-Montrachet Clos Saint Jean tend to be a little more substantial than those of neighbouring crus.
