Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets 2008 has a splendid nose with some development. Lovely stoney minerality mingles with generous orchard fruit, apricots and honeydew melon. Good depth thanks to smokey minerality, nuttiness and gentle oak notes that are now fully integrated. Complex, medium-full body, rich and incredibly well balanced on the palate. Liquorice, oak, nuts, yellow orchard fruit mix with bright, fresh acidity lead into a very elegant, clean, and lengthy finish.

The soil of Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets is predominantly stoney and shallow. Up at the top of the slope there are outcrops of bare rock and the soil is mainly white marl. This will give the wine weight. Lower down, there is more calcareous surface soil, producing a wine of steely elegance. A blend of the two makes the best wine.

Les Caillerets is one of Chassagne-Montrachet's largest premiers crus. It is also widely recognised as the best. Les Caillerets covers an area of 10.68ha, and lies at an altitude of between 250 and 280 metres above sea level immediately to the south of Chassagne itself.
