Domaine Lucien Boillot Pommard 1er Cru Les Frémiers 2008

"Smokey black tea and mulberry aromas in Lucien Boillot's 2008 Pommard Les Fremiers lead to a firm yet impressively gripping palate whose notes of salt, sage, berry skin, and stone add to a stimulating yet metaphorically dark personality. This ought to merit following for at least half a dozen years. 89 Points" Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Pommard can yield some of the most robust reds of the Côte De Beaune, but to taste Lucien Boillot’s Les Frémiers is to take a walk on the wild side. The Lucien Boillot estate’s clay and limestone based premier cru Les Frémiers plot is less than a third of an acre of almost 50-year-old vines, making this wine remarkably hard to come by. Non-interventionist practices in the vineyards and in the cellar mean this wine ferments with only natural yeasts before ageing for about 17 months and being bottled without filtration.

Les Frémiers is a premier cru climat of the Pommard appellation in the Côte De Beaune. Wines made from grapes grown within the climat may claim the Pommard premier cru title and also cite the Les Frémiers name on their labels.

Les Frémiers is part of the same lieu-dit (a French term for a geographical area with a traditional name) as the Fremiets climat in neighbouring Volnay. The two vineyards have identical pronunciations, but are quite capable of producing distinct styles of wine, the Pommard being heavier and more rustic, the Volnay being lighter and more restrained.
