Domaine Rapet Pere Et Fils Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2014 has a beautiful golden glimmer and it bears the mark of its flinty terroir. Relatively restrained and understated on the nose. Smoke and slate notes on the palate with a floral quality that has just begun to emerge. At present this requires some aeration to fully release its nuances, but there is plenty going on under the surface – it just needs some bottle age to break free of its youthful shell. Reassuringly concentrated fruit on the finish. After 5 to 10 years in the cellar, this will begin to reveal an aromatic richness of honey and toasted almonds and an exquisite mineral touch.

A great wine from a grand cru vineyard that straddles both the Pernand-Vergelesses and the Aloxe-Corton communes. Rapet's Corton Charlemagne vineyard is planted with vines of varying ages, ranging from 10 to over 50 years old, as regular re-planting enables them to combine the power of the older vines with the finesse of younger plants.

The name Corton-Charlemagne evokes history. Corton is a composite word meaning "Othon's Court". In medieval Latin, "Cortis" designated a courtyard and it was used in the same way as the Gallo-Roman word "Villa", indicating a property belonging to a member of the Frankish nobility.

Charlemagne is linked to a well-known endowment. The church in Aloxe, dedicated to Saint Médard, was placed under the patronage of the Saulieu Collegiate to which Charlemagne donated his vineyards in 775.

This south-west oriented grand cru vineyard is planted on sand and lime marl on a very steep slope. The shallow, top-layer of soil, composed of crumbly rock, is fairly light, poor and very stoney.
