Fervo - Marzemino Passito DOCG - Astoria Vini (50cl)
This is a sweet, velvety desert wine from Refrontolo in Italy's Veneto. Made from pure marzemino grapes it has good body with plenty of ripe blackberry and loganberry fruit flavours together with hints of cherries and a dark, chocolate finish. It works well with berry fruit puddings such as summer pudding or even with chocolate deserts, the darker and fuller the better. It has plenty of sweetnes and good balancing acidity.

The grapes are picked by hand when they are slightly over-ripe to capture as much natural sugar as possible. They are then dried on straw mats at the winery to concentrate both sugars and acidity. Before fermentation the grapes enjoy a period of "soaking" at low temperature for 2 or 3 days to extract colour and fragrance from the skins then before fermentation is finished, the process is blocked to achieve a high level of residual sugar (120 grams per litre) Only around 1.5 kilos of grapes are produced by every vine and this quantity is further reduced by around 30% after drying.
About the grower
Brothers Paolo and Giorgio Polegato, members of the same winemaking family behind Antonini Ceresa Vini, set up Astoria Vini in 1987. Astoria wines are mainly produced from grapes grown on its own 40 acre Tenuta Val De Brun estate in Refrontolo, right in the heart of the DOCG Conegliano-Valdobbiadene zone. As you would expect from such a location the excellence of Astoria Vini Prosecco is a given. What you might not expect is the range and the quality of the still wines produced by Astoria Vini, from light, fresh, unoaked whites to substantial, ageworthy, barrique-aged reds and dried grape, Passito dessert wines - all of which are very stylishly packaged.
Awards for the Astoria Vini range of wines are numerous and it is seldom a year that goes by at Vinitaly, Italy's major wine fair, that the Polegato brothers are not rewarded in some form. In addition to the high quality of their wines they consistently offer exceptionally stylish packaging, helping the Astoria Vini to wines stand out in any situation. Great value, great looking and great quality.
