Maria Mascarello suggests that you don’t leave this Giuseppe Mascarello E Figlio Barolo Villero in a decanter for too long so as not to miss its beautifully perfumed nose, featuring archetypal Nebbiolo aromas of tar and roses with spiced, red berry fruit scents woven around. Strawberry, cranberry and cherry fruit lifted by a dusting of baking spices and supported by more grounded liquorice and leafy/tobacco flavours. Rich and dense, yet very supple and disarmingly approachable at such a young age.

The 2009 Giuseppe Mascarello E Figlio Barolo Villero is the yang to the Mascarello Barolo Santo Stefano Di Perno’s yin, the feminine to its sibling’s masculine. Grown in the Villero vineyard in the village of Castiglione Falletto, the soil is somewhat sandier here and it provides a lighter coloured, ethereally perfumed and charmingly sensual style of Barolo. This relative delicacy is also reflected in the length of time that the Mascarello Barolo Villero spends in the estate’s large Slavonian oak casks: 30 months versus 32 months for the Barolo Santo Stefano Di Perlo and 36 months for the Barolo Monprivato.
