Maury Grenat - Domaine Fontanel 2017
A superb red dessert wine made from Grenache Noir of around 60 years of age. It is a Vin Doux Naturel, that is to say a naturally sweet wine that was produced by blocking the fermentation of the grape must with grape alcohol thus leaving a good level of residual sugar in the wine. When the grapes arrived at the winery they were completely destemmed before going into the vat where the marc was added. They were then left to macerate for around 40 days before being transferred to a tank for the 1st 12 months ageing and then for 12 months in bottle.
The wine has an intense ruby colour that is so very attractive in the glass. The aomas are of ripe black cherries with some cocoa and toasted notes. On the plalate it is rich, well fruited, delicately sweet and well rounded. It is just the ticket to enjoy either by itself as an aperitif or with chocolate or cherry desserts (clafoutis). Other red fruits such as strawberry or raspberry work superbly too. Another suggestion would be with Moroccan foods such as a duck tagine. Serve slightly chilled around 14 degrees or so.

Why we like this wine
Well apart from the sheer quality which is obvious from the first pour, it has a wonderful silky quality on the palate with sensuous black fruit flavours and an almost glycerine creamyness. It can work so well with an enormous spectrum of foods from savoury such as a duck tagine or some roquefort to a heavy chocolate dessert. A stunning wine that will delight more or less everyone.
