Mousset de Bouard - Montagne St Emilion 2016
What an exceptional wine! They say you shouldn't judge a book by its cover and so you shouldn't judge a wine by its appellation. Musset de Bouard is from Chateau Clos de Bouard, the latest offering from Coralie de Bouard of Chateau Angelus fame. Clos de Bouard, the main chateau is situated in a perect spot close to Troplong Mondot and Valandraud with a vineyard with an average age of 40 years. The grapes for this little stunner are Merlot 60% Cabernet Franc 30% 1nd Cabernet Sauvignon 10% and were given a cold pre-fermentative soak at around 9 degrees before alcoholice fermentation with an average of 4 weeks vatting. The various wines then spent between 10 and 14 months in French barriques, 30% of which were new. The wine has an opulent mouthfeel with plenty of rich dark fruit reminiscent of black cherries and plums. The tannins are fine grained and silky but sufficient to give the wine backbone a longevity probably of around 12 years. A wonderful offering.
