Pares Balta Indigena is reminiscent of a bundle of bright, ripe, wild forest fruits on the nose, with a haunting, floral perfume and a touch of smoke that give this wine its very particular allure. The wild fruits and flowers continue onto the palate, with a refreshing juicy, berry fruit acidity accompanying those flavours. There’s also a very satisfying mineral component in there, something that Parés Baltà is well known for in a number of its wines. It is a fresher style of Grenache to be sure, and quite a change from so many of the dense, dark examples of this variety one often finds in Spain.

Although the vines for the Parés Baltà Indigena are relatively young, you would think they were far older from the quality of their grapes. The loam and gypsum soil of the Finca Les Torres vineyard is ideally suited to growing Grenache and the cooler temperatures at its 400m altitude help to maintain a wonderful freshness. A cool ferment in stainless steel, followed by a short sleep in barrel, ensures that Indigena's bright fruit and floral character remains after elevage. It was aged for 5 months in second fill French oak that supplies smokey undertones on the palate, while the red berry fruit combines well with hints of exotic spices.
