Piancornello Rosso Di Montalcino

Piancornello Rosso Di Montalcino shows a bright ruby colour with a delicate intensity. The intriguingly complex nose is characteristic, with notes of red and black berry fruit, liquorice and sweet tobacco. This wine is always a bit firmer than the Campo Della Macchia, with slightly more chewy tannic grip and a little less acidity. As with all of Piancornello's wines, this wine shows off the perfect use of oak to balance its cherry and plum fruit.

Piancornello Rosso Di Montalcino comes from the same vineyards as the estate's Brunello Di Montalcino and is also made entirely from Sangiovese. Rather than experiencing the long ageing required for the Brunello DOCG, Rosso Di Montalcino spends 10 months in tonneaux (25% new) before being bottled.

2016 was a challenging and tiring vintage. With very little rain, winemaker Claudio Monaci was forced to irrigate the vines. Usually in a hot vintage such as 1998 and 2003, the acidity tends to drop dramatically. In 2016, however, it was a surprise to see how the acidity was actually maintained in the wines. There was no interruption of ripening, no water stress. At the beginning of September the rain came and the harvest started a little later than usual, but yielded a fantastic crop of beautiful grapes.

From Monica Larner writing in Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
Round, supple and rich, the 2016 Piancornello Rosso Di Montalcino happily delivers the goods. The aromatic layers are surprisingly deep with thick strata of luscious black fruit, candied cherry, vanilla bean and a light touch of espresso derived from ten careful months of tonneaux ageing. This Rosso drinks like a Brunello with a reported 14.5% alcohol and the big bones to match. If you’re looking for a less formal, but exceedingly generous expression from Montalcino, this is your wine. Drink: 2014-2020. 02/14. 90 Points
