Robert Sinskey Vineyards Cabernet Franc Vandal Vineyard

Robert Sinskey Vineyards Cabernet Franc Vandal Vineyard is a dark, almost opaque wine in the glass that is equally brooding on the nose as dark cherry/plum and berry co-mingle with rain-soaked forest floor. The flavours speak with a French accent - deep and seductive notes of berry, plum, a hint of graphite, cocoa dust and violets. A persistent yet elegant structure adds to the allure.

You can’t fight mother nature. The winter of 2011 was wet and received 130% of the normal rainfall for the season. A cooler than normal spring delayed bloom, reducing fruit set in many of the Robert Sinskey vineyards.

In vintages such as this, where late spring and early summer rains become an issue, the cover crops are left growing in the field longer, to wick away moisture and throttle back vine vigour. Cover crops were mowed and vine tillage was delayed, if employed at all. If these actions didn’t control the vigour enough, leaf pulling and other canopy management methods were employed to increase sunlight on the fruit and enhance air circulation for reduced mildew pressure.

With a vintage like 2011, it helped not to have a fixed mindset. If you are only interested in making a big, powerful wine, you are destined for failure, but if your practices reflect the vagaries of the vintage and you are more interested in the expression of terroir, you will succeed with an elegant, flavoursome and well balanced wine like this 2011 Robert Sinskey Vineyards Cabernet Franc Vandal Vineyard.
