Taliano Michele Barbaresco Ad Altiora 2003 has a lovely deep garnet hue, with legs like a Victorian aquaduct. Creamy and sweet raspberry and blackberry fruit, gentle oak spice and leathery, smokey overtones on the nose. On the palate, bright berry fruit gives way to pepper and tar spice, with blackcurrant-scented acidity and plenty of Nebbiolo's fine grained, drying tannins providing structure. Mature and nicely rounded, the long finish has notes of dark-roasted coffee, violets and sweet bramble fruit.

Taliano Michele Barbaresco Ad Altiora is made from Nebbiolo grown in the areas of the Bric (mountainside vineyard) Montersino that have the best exposure to sunlight, harvested when perfectly ripe. The alcoholic fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks, before the wine was drawn off into French oak barriques where it stayed for 24 months.

"Ad Altiora" is a Latin phrase meaning "the higher", indicating the desire of the Taliano family to constantly strive to improve the qualities of this wine year after year. As fine as it already is, they are always aiming higher.
