The Doctors' Sauvignon Blanc

The Doctors' Sauvignon Blanc is a classic New Zealand style that leaps from the glass with red capsicum, passionfruit and fresh herb aromas. It’s full and satisfying to taste, with that crisp, refreshing, tropical Marlborough finish. All this and a naturally modest 9.5% level of alcohol. What’s not to like about that?!

The 2017 vintage will be remembered as a very low yielding year, some 40% down on the record 2014 harvest or 20% below the longer term average. A number of factors made it so frugal. Firstly, it is only natural for vines to produce less fruit after such a large crop the previous year. Secondly, a cool period right at the point at which the vines flowered resulted in reduced fertilisation and less fruit subsequently. Finally, the remainder of the growing season was very hot and dry, limiting vine vigour and berry size. For producers interested in quality over quantity, it was an ideal year as there was no need for expensive fruit thinning and leaf plucking, making for a relatively easy growing season. Harvest was 7-10 days earlier than usual, around 20th March, and was almost over by the second week of April. This was fortunate because Easter, just as in 2014, again proved to be wet. The results looked impressive, even as the wines were settling after fermentation - they were aromatic, with great flavour and good palate weight.

Dr. John Forrest’s love of innovation and experimentation was firmly tested in his attempts to produce this lower alcohol, yet full flavoured, The Doctors' Sauvignon Blanc in Marlborough. Careful selection of Sauvignon Blanc grape clones, vineyard sites and microclimate, plus a couple of little viticultural secrets, have resulted in this ground breaking wine.
