Tin Cottage Sauvignon Blanc by Bladen Wines
This superb NZ Sauvignon has a bright, pale straw yellow colour with tinges of green. The nose is tight at first then it opens to generous helpings of gooseberries, fresh herbs and passionfruit. The palate is super concentrated and as well as the passionfruit and gooseberry there are elements of tropical fruit interwoven through the wine. It is long and lingering in the finish. Enjoy a glass with asparagus and mint risotto, click here for the recipe.
Tin Cottage refers back to the caravan that Dave and Christine McDonald lived in when they were searching for their dream; a wine estate in the then undiscovered area of Marlborough.
This is actually made from fruit harvested from vineyards that they rent and tend on a long term contract.

Conditions were very dry early in the season, with average temperatures, clear skies and a high risk of frost. Warm conditions over flowering in mid-December resulted in good yields. Decent rain in early and mid-January, allowed for healthy canopies and vigorous growth. February was hot and dry, followed by warm, dry March; perfect weather for intense flavour development. The grapes were machine harvested in cool morning conditions to minimise the accumulation of any phenolics. The clear juice was then racked and cold fermented using selected yeast strains to preserve the fruit’s intense varietal flavour. OK so the last bit is a bit geeky but don't let it put you off, this is fantastic wine.
Why we like this wine
Well to begin, it's just such a fantastic example of what NZ Sauvignon Blanc should be and why for many years this style of wine has been appealing to many white wine lovers. With the demand for New Zealand Sauvignon being so high many multiple producers have tended to offer dilute wines that don't justify the price tag associated with this style of wine. None of that here. Dave and Christine MacDonald only do things to achieve the greatest wines they can and this is a super example of not only their abilities but also of the ability of the Marlborough vineyards to produce high quality Sauvignon Blanc.
