Vinedos De Paganos Rioja El Puntido 2015 has intense aromas of black fruits with pencil shavings and toast, lead into a full and generous palate with good structure showing hints of spice with the fruit. Delicious now, but will certainly keep for another 5 to 10 years.

The Viñedos De Páganos winery in Rioja is surrounded by the vineyards of El Puntido, a steep slope of 25 hectares with a southerly orientation that was planted with Tempranillo in 1975. Thanks to limited yields and to careful viticulture, Viñedos De Páganos Rioja El Puntido is produced. It is a wine that is very much of its terroir, made to highlight the quality of the Tempranillo and the soil it grows in. Unlike many other Riojas, El Puntido is not made with traditional classifications in mind. It could be marketed as a Rioja Reserva, but that is not its raison d'être. Instead, the Eguren family make the best wine they can from the raw materials they possess and they age it as they see fit. In the modern fashion, El Puntido is aged for 18 months in French oak barriques before being bottled.

About the grower

Viñedos de Páganos is one of Sierra Cantabria's exclusive wineries, located in the village of Páganos in Rioja Alavesa amongst dolmens, archaeological sites and ancient chapels. Founded in 1998 by Marcos and Miguel Eguren and carved into the stone of the vineyard, the objective of Viñedos de Páganos winery is to produce great wines that represent all of the intrinsic characteristics and personality that the union of climate, soil and grape varieties offers.

The cellar sits in the exceptional El Puntido vineyard, the name of which was taken from an old word meaning "staircase landing" thanks to the similarity of shape that this land forms between the Sierra de Cantabria and the Ebro River valley. The area is predominantly influenced by an Atlantic climate, although it has continental nuances due to the shelter from the cold, north winds afforded by the Sierra de Cantabria.

The soils of the Viñedos de Páganos estate are calcareous clay or clay-loam in texture with a sandstone subsoil, giving the vineyard, and therefore its wines, a unique mineral personality. Tempranillo is perfectly adapted to these soils, and beautifully expresses the terroir in which the vineyard is planted.
