Viñedos De Páganos Rioja El Puntido 2006
Vinedos De Paganos Rioja El Puntido 2006 retains its youthful colour, even after spending a year and a half in new oak barrels. Purple and maroon hued with a viscous structure. The nose is intense: blackberries, blueberries, eucalyptus, bay leaf, liquorice, Sechuan pepper, cardamom, balsam and spices intertwine. The stylish palate is woven into a superb tannic structure, balanced and with a silky smoothness. Voluptuous, lively and complex, with copious notes of ripe berries, violets, dark berry jams and suggestions of cherries in the background. The Viñedos De Páganos El Puntido explores the very concept of Rioja: elegance, limpidity, vibrant acidity and depth.

Viñedos De Páganos Rioja El Puntido is made by the Eguren family - an integral part of the history of grape farming in Alava. The passage of nearly a century and a half sees the sixth generation dedicated to tending its precious Rioja vineyards. Marcos Eguren, wise farmer turned brilliant winemaker, added a new jewel to Bodegas Sierra Cantabria's range of quality wines and its diversity of styles: El Puntido. The vineyard lies at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria mountains in Páganos, a council annexed to the medieval town of Laguardia. Planted in 1975, the El Puntido vineyard is 25 hectares of vines aligned north to south, sheltered by the rugged mountains. This allows for a long growing season and for the bountiful ripening of the Tempranillo planted there.
Jay S. Miller writing for Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
Purple-coloured with a fragrant nose of wood smoke, espresso, Asian spices, black cherry and blackberry. Dense, round and smooth-textured, this opulent effort is loaded with luscious fruit and has enough structure to evolve for at least 6-8 years. Drink this lengthy effort from 2016-2026. 94 Points
