Viñedos De Páganos Rioja La Nieta 2008

"The 2008 Vinedos De Paganos Rioja La Nieta, tasted from barrel, is purple-colored with a racy, slightly high-toned perfume of mineral, lavender, spice box, incense, and black cherry. This is followed by a dense, structured wine with plenty of savoury fruit for balance. This will be an elegant version of La Nieta that should evolve for 4-5 years and drink well through 2030."

Finca La Nieta is in Languardia, just within Rioja Alavesa, and benefits from vines that are 35 years old. Harvesting was done berry by berry rather than bunch by bunch. The grapes were given a cold soak for 5 days before fermentation began amplifying the deep fruit flavours. Both malolactic fermentation and ageing took place in a new set French oak barrels and no expense was spared in the making of Viñedos De Páganos Rioja La Nieta. This is a truly remarkable wine from the Eguren stable: ripe, spicy, powerful and structured yet so perfectly balanced that it has elegance and finesse.

Sarah Jane Evans MW, Decanter 06/15:
The Eguren family manages a number of projects in Rioja. At the tiny winery of Paganos, Marcos Eguren produces just two wines (the other is El Puntido). La Nieta is 100% Tempranillo, spending 18 months in new French oak. The richness of the young fruit masks the oak, creating a powerful and concentrated wine that will grow into itself to express its elegance. Drink 2014–2024
