Chorey-Les-Beaune is famous for producing hearty, spiced, red Burgundies with a good deal of muscle and herbal-tinged, woodland berry fruit. Domaine Tollot-Beaut takes Chorey's rustic side and gives it a bit of polish, endowing it with a lovely sheen of velvety texture and sophistication. Domaine Tollot-Beaut's Chorey-Lès-Beaune has a mineral-driven freshness that nicely complements the polish, and all of the lavish fruit that the estate's thoughtful winemaking lends.

Domaine Tollot-Beaut is based in Chorey-Lès-Beaune and this accounts for its relatively low-profile status and for the value it offers. This under-the-radar status doesn't stop it from producing fantastic Burgundies with the same artisanal, quality-dedicated mindset we always look for. They use no fertilisers, they keep yields low and they harvest by hand.

Why we like this wine

With Burgundy being a very expensive commodity thanks to quite a few short harvests and the weakness of Stirling, it's great to find something that not only represents good value but also epitomises exactly what Burgundy should taste like. The abundance of spicy crushed raspberry fruit, perfect balance on the palate and a fresh, vibrant finish makes this wine a joy to drink now but it will certainly repay cellaring if you can keep your hands off it!

  • Top class Burgundy
  • Drinks well above other wines from this appellation
  • Good for now or for a few years in the cellar

About the grower

Domaine Rapet Père Et Fils' lineage can be traced back to at least 1765 thanks to a dated, silver tastevin much treasured by the family. Rapet is one of the most ancient families of the Côte D’Or and the estate is now under the control of Vincent Rapet and his charming wife Sylvette who manage the 20 hectares with skill and a keen eye to nature. Based in the village of Pernand-Vergelesses, Domaine Rapet’s vineyards lie on and around the hill of Corton.

The wines of Pernand-Vergelesses have great individuality and, at Domaine Rapet, a full spectrum can be tasted. The white wines are fresh and lively with delicious citrus and floral notes. As you'd expect, the premiers crus give more power on the palate and of these vineyards Sous Frétille is perhaps regarded as the best. That is, of course, if you don't count the grand cru Corton Charlemagne vineyard that produces stunning, long-lived wines that age for decades in the finest vintages.

The finely fleshed red wines of Domaine Rapet are quite simply stunning and offer great value. The premier cru of Les Vergelesses backs onto the appellation of Savigny-Lès-Beaune and seems to bear a similar charm, whilst also benefitting from a distict minerality beneath the bright berry fruit and fine tannins. The grand cru of Corton Les Pougeots is big and structured, and it generally needs a little time to soften and become rounded. But it's well worth the wait, for Vincent's hands always craft a superb wine that is a sensational food partner when mature.
